Horticulturist of the Year 2008

Shirley KerinsShirley Kerins

Shirley Kerins has been enthusiastically active in our Society for 30 years, making significant contributions in a wide range of areas. She has served as our president, presented programs at our meetings and provided plants for our drawings. But Shirley’s impact on the world of Southern California horticulture extends far beyond the SCHS to include 30 years at the Huntington Botanical Gardens and active participation in other plant related activities. From 1984 to 1999, Shirley served as curator of the Huntington’s Herb Garden and today she is manager of plant production and plant sales. You may also know Shirley from her work in residential and public gardens as a licensed landscape architect. Her residential gardens have been featured in publications such as Sunset magazine. Or perhaps you heard her lecture or attended classes she’s taught at UCLA, the Huntington, LA Arboretum and other botanic gardens. The 2008 Award Banquet honoring Shirley will pay fitting tribute to one of the most deserving members of our community. The special event will culminate with Shirley’s talk, Playing in the Dirt. You Call That a Job?, that is sure to be entertaining.

Our Awards Banquets at the Huntington Botanical Gardens include a delicious buffet in a classic outdoor setting with wonderful company, a fun Silent Auction, and a tribute to our award recipient.
