    Coffee in the Garden

    Alfred Hockenmaier Garden
    Saturday, May 4, 2024, 9am - 12pm

    First Tour: 9:00 - 10:30am

In the heart of the San Fernando Valley lies a hidden botanical gem that has been in the same family for three generations. The garden includes mature citrus and avocado as well as many stone fruit. Rainwater is harvested from both the roof of the house as well as the garage for a total of 7,435 gallons of storage. There are vegetable gardens, a desert garden, greenhouses, small stream and pond, something different at every turn!

Alfred is an award-winning orchid grower and at the recent Santa Barbara International Orchid Show last March, he won the trophy for Best Vanda of Show for his Vanda MV Tannis ‘Kirk’.  The garden is his life’s work as he has been committed to adapting the garden to an ever-warming climate. Be sure to have a couple of his mother’s freshly baked German Christmas cookies that have become a staple at his open houses.

This event is divided into two tours, limited to 30 people each. First tour from 9am - 10:30am; second tour from 10:30am -12pm.  We will start a waitlist if a tour fills up. This event is free for SCHS members; $15 for non-members and guests. SCHS will be providing coffee, cold drinks and light refreshments. Please note: carpooling is encouraged due to limited street parking.

Registration is required to create a list for check-in at the event. The garden address and directions will be provided upon receipt of registration. Online registration closes on Thursday, May 2 at 5pm. For questions, contact: socalhort@gmail.com or Laura at 626-437-9459
