Topic:

Norfolk and Lord Howe Islands: Little-Known Gems of the South Pacific

Even the best-traveled plant seekers have not heard of, or been to, Norfolk and Lord Howe Islands, located in the Tasman Sea. Pacific coast gardeners are familiar with many plants that originate from these tiny islands.

Kerry Morris and Donald Hodel, our June meeting guest speakers, not only traveled to these islands in October 2005, but they went the extra mile once they got there.

Among other arduous challenges they used ropes to pull themselves up vertical cliffs in order to climb Mt. Gower and see the montane forest first hand. The photos they took and the plants they saw are the fascinating topics of their presentation as they share their slides and stories of these islands at our meeting.

Kerry, an SCHS board member, and Don, an Environmental Horticulturist, have also collaborated on the terrific cover story article in the April/May/June issue of Pacific Horticulture magazine.

Location: Friendship Auditorium, 3201 Riverside Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90027. Click here for a map to Friendship Auditorium.
The Plant Raffle was provided by The South Coast Botanic Garden.
