Annual Members Night:
Irresistible Cookies, Plants & People
A grand and glorious tradition continues with the arrival of our always-anticipated “Cookie Night” at the Annual Members Night meeting on Thursday, December 14.
We always look forward to this once-yearly opportunity to share quality time and conversations with our fellow members as we take a break this month from our guest speaker presentations.
And then there are the cookies, baked goods, finger foods, and other taste treats each of us brings in to share with our fellow society members. To no one’s surprise, many of our members are as experienced at appreciating the finer points of snacking culture as they are at horticulture.
In addition to the epicurean exchange, we’ve included special activities during this year’s holiday gathering that we know you’ll enjoy just as much. It’s our first Members Night Plant Exchange, and we’re having an expanded Sharing Table, too. You’ll want to arrive by 7:45 p.m. if you plan to participate. Here are the exciting details.
THE PLANT EXCHANGE
Each member may bring up to 10 healthy, pest-free, non-invasive plants, seed packets or bulbs to place in the exchange. You’ll receive one ticket for each plant, seed packet or bulb you contribute, so don’t hold back.
Please label each item with the plant name. Also, bring either a Plant Forum description card or provide culture information for each species (for example, if all 10 of your plants are the same plant, then you need provide only one card).
If you don’t have a Plant Forum card handy, the plant description you provide should include:
- Botanical name
- Common name
- Country of origin
- Kind of plant and size
- Flowering or fruiting season
- Culture (water and sun needs)
- Where grown
- Your name and the meeting date
Plants will be expertly described, a là Plant Forum style, and some may be included in the Green Sheet. The Exchange will be conducted in 10 action-packed rounds. You’ll be able to redeem one ticket for one plant, seed packet or bulb per round.
If you bring in more than 10 plants, please donate the extras to the Sharing Table.
THE SHARING TABLE
In keeping with our night’s theme of members sharing with members, we invite you to bring any garden ornaments, viable plant materials, garden tools, books, or other garden accessories and items that you no longer use or want. Something gathering dust in your garden shed might be exactly what another member has been longing for.
Other great items to share include garden bounty (herbs, lemons, pomegranates), dried flowers and grasses, decorative seed pods, holly boughs, pots, trellises, seeds, etc. Just look around and see what you might share. No “junk” please and be prepared to take any unwanted “treasures” home with you!
Guests are invited to participate in the Cookie and Sharing table festivities. So, please bring your friends to enjoy the fun!
