Success With Succulents

No longer relegated to desert climates, succulent plants offer gardeners in all parts of the country extraordinary color, texture, durability and ease of care. Using his new book as an introduction, combined with an upcoming exhibition of prints beginning in March 2009 at San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers, Saxon showed a variety of succulents and discussed success stories.

Saxon Holt is widely recognized as one of the top photographers in the world of garden photography. His images have appeared in magazines as diverse as Pacific Horticulture and Architectural Digest. Hardy Succulents (Storey Publishing, 2008) with author Gwen Kelaidis is his latest book. Over the past 20 years, he has won awards for his magazine work, calendars, books and his portfolio, including four Garden Globe awards from the Garden Writers of America.

Mr. Holt has been the sole photographer for more than 20 titles and currently has nine in print including the highly acclaimed Grasses (with Nancy Ondra, Storey 2002) and award-winning Plants and Landscapes for Summer-Dry Climates.

His understanding of plants and appreciation of the landscape infuses his work with a signature style that reveals both the art and science of gardening. His goal is to explore the relationship between man and the man-made landscape.

Saxon Holt lives and gardens in Marin County, California. He is currently working on a book with John Greenlee tentatively titled, Meadows By Design, to be published by Timber Press in 2009.
