The American Meadow Garden

John Greenlee is a grass ecology expert, nurseryman, and author of the newly-published The American Meadow Garden. At our March meeting, John presented a slideshow that illustrated the danger of the common Bermuda lawn, displayed images of meadows in nature, and explained how and why to grow a meadow instead of a lawn. Also included in his presentation were images of meadows that John has designed and installed around the world.

A skilled horticulturist and garden designer, John Greenlee is founder of Greenlee Nursery, the oldest specialty grass nursery on the West Coast. He is also the author of The Encyclopedia of Ornamental Grasses.

book coverAs an expert in grass ecology and champion of sustainable design, John has made meadows all around the world, from The San Diego Zoo in Southern California and Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Florida, to private residencies in Morocco and Saudi Arabia.  His movement to reinvent America’s turf-lawn culture has grabbed headlines in major media sources such as The New York Times, Martha Stewart Living, Architectural Digest, Garden Design, The Los Angeles Times, and Sunset Magazine.

John and his family live in Northern California.
